An interactive reading experience for first-year nursing students

Client

De Haagse Leest

This project focused on “De Haagse Leest” an initiative dedicated to promoting reading in The Hague. The goal was to encourage young readers to engage more with literature, combining education with social interaction.

Brief

Brief

We were asked to design a tool that motivates first-year nursing students to read more actively. The app needed to make reading social, engaging, and tailored to different interests, creating a collaborative learning experience that could spark intrinsic motivation.

Duration

4–5 weeks

Project

My interpretation

I translated the research findings into a prototype that allows students to read books together with friends, explore genres of interest, and stay motivated through social interaction. The design was inspired by “De Haagse Leest” and emphasizes collaborative engagement while keeping the interface simple and intuitive.

Challenge

The main challenge was understanding what drives students to read and how to translate that into a digital tool. Extensive research through interviews, surveys, and tests was required to identify needs, habits, and motivations. Turning these insights into a functional, appealing prototype demanded both creativity and user-focused design.

Outcome

The prototype demonstrates how social reading can enhance intrinsic motivation among students. By combining research insights with thoughtful design, we created a tool that encourages group reading, personalized exploration of genres, and a stronger connection to literature. The project reinforced the importance of research as a foundation for design and highlighted how collaboration can improve user engagement.
